Dancing with the Stars - Weak 6

Monday, October 27th, 2008

There’s gonna be a group Hip Hop dance tonight…be still, my gag reflex. Other than that, maybe this week will be less weak than usual; the Lord of the Dance is substituting for the Old Brit judge tonight (well…that’s still in the barf-in-my-mouth category), and most of the dead weight has been eliminated from the contestant horde…except for Chicken Legs, but she’s ERICA KANE, so deal with it.

From the Sublime to the Ridiculous

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

I’ve just spent a regrettable half-hour reading posts from the unwashed conservative masses in Orange County, defending their Cro-magnun stance on same-sex marriage and boosting their support for this twisted and misguided Proposition 8 in California. I can’t usually be called naive, but I was shocked and odd to read how ignorant some of my fellow Californians still are.

There were, however, the occasional sensible posts from the No on Prop 8 crowd. Here is one of the most intelligent (albeit excitable) ones I’ve read, from “Kimberly”:

Regardless of how you feel about homosexuality or gay marriage, Proposition 8 is about one thing and one thing only: Are you as a Californian WILLING TO CHANGE OUR CONSTITUTION for the sole purpose of DISCRIMINATING against a select group of individuals? Think carefully before you answer. Today it’s just discrimination against someone you don’t personally like. Tomorrow it could be you. This violates everything we believe in as Americans. The fact that it is even on the ballot in this day and age shocks and disturbs me. What’s next? Repeal interracial marriage? Only people of a certain religion can marry? Maybe we should remove the right to vote for gays - and take back that right from African-Americans and women while were at it. It’s the same mentality. Shame on anyone who would vote yes on this vile proposition.

And, just to show that the No on 8 folks can make their points in just as inflammatory a manner as their opponents, here’s “Tom Parker’s” take on things:

Wow, I’ve never seen so many terrified people in my life.

Save the children? Protect marriage?

Oh my stars and garters…the GAYS are coming to get us! To taint us with their sinful lifestyles and - GASP! - maybe turn my children gay!

Every passionate supporter of Prop 8 reminds me of the mom in the movie Carrie. You probably lock your children in the closet and read them scripture through the cracks. You are the exact same people who fled to the suburbs to escape the Blacks and built bomb shelters to protect you from the Russians.

It’s so ironic to see a group of people who think of themselves as “strong Americans” expose themselves as a hilariously huge bunch of wimps.

Grow a pair, America.

Oh, and to all the parents of young children who support Prop 8: your kids are totally going to be gay.

If you live in California, or know anyone who does, please vote No on this proposition. Look clearly at the lies the Yes folks are perpetrating, and separate Church from State, y’all.

From Apple’s website today:

No on Prop 8
Apple is publicly opposing Proposition 8 and making a donation of $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign. Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights — including the right to marry — should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8.

I love it when the hardware I’m queer for supports my being queer for other hardware. As it were.

Hi. As some of you know, I write a newspaper column called “Media Shmedia.” Writer’s Digest has an annual writing competition, and they determined it wasn’t shit. Woo to the hoo.

Here is the column in question, if you’re curious.

I hear that Sarah Palin is planning an ad campaign like this for Alaska:

We Love David Sedaris

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

The droll and diminutive humorist has written an article about Presidential elections for that normallly overblown magazine that I normally don’t like because it’s normally so pretentious. But back to David Sedaris, my favorite part is his metaphorical evaluation of the choice between these two candidates:

To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”

I Usually Think Polls Are Stupid

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

But I like this one okay (as of today at 4:30 p.m.):

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has opened up a 10-point lead over Republican opponent John McCain two weeks before the November 4 U.S. election, according to Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released on Tuesday.

The poll found 52 percent of voters favor Obama compared with 42 percent for McCain, up from a 6-point Obama edge two weeks ago, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The poll also found that the popularity of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has fallen. Voters are less likely to see the Republican vice presidential nominee in a positive light, and much more likely to report negative feelings, the Wall Street Journal said.

Forty-seven percent view Palin negatively, compared with 38 percent who see her in a positive light.

Fifty-five percent of voters say Palin is not qualified to be president, up from 50 percent two weeks ago.
