Deny Us Marriage, But Don’t Fuck With Our Musicals
I did A Chorus Line once upon a time for Sacramento Music Circus (aka California Musical Theatre); it was a joyous experience, made especially so by the fine Leland Ball (director/artistic director) and the gracious Jimmy Roddy (choreographer).
It seems that the fellow who has subsequently been the artistic director of that theater made a $1,000 contribution to Yes on Proposition 8, the California amendment to the State Constitution that bans same-sex marriage (and will, eventually be declared unconstitutional again, just watch). Susan Egan (the original Beauty in the Disney show with the Beast) wanted everybody theatricale to know about it.
The musical Hairspray has played recently at this theater, and its composer, Marc Shaiman, had a thing or two to say to this fellow. The musical Avenue Q will be playing at this theater later this year; one of its creators, Jeff Whitty, has had some kerfluffle-esque things to say on the subject.
This Yes Man, Scott Eckern (who is, incidentally, a Mormon — surprise!!), has resigned the position, as of today.
Although it’s no mystery that I’m absolutely, utterly against Prop 8, I do have mixed feelings about this situation. And that’s all I’ll say for now.
What do you think?

It breaks my heart to know that Californians would actually vote for that piece of hate.
Re: Ekhern- It’s unnerving that a person could be drummed out of a position because of their political views. I disagree heartily with this man’s decision- his vote (and monetary contributions)affects millions of people. I have to think about this more….
