Last night, a terrifically talented young dancer named Lauren won “So You Think You Can Dance.” And a terrifically overblown trainwreck named Rachel was voted out of “Big Brother.” To the naked eye, they both look to be at diametrically opposite ends of the talent spectrum — one has it, the other doesn’t. Yet I have enjoyed them both very much.
Top 3, baby, and it’s everybody I wanna see most. The first number is Kent and All-Star Lauren doing Bollywood, and it is such joy…it’s making me remember why I love(d) being a dancer. It might’ve been Nakul Kidman’s best (at least, most entertaining) piece, and it sure was fun to watch. Sure, it was kinda sloppy, but it was athletic, and energetic, and chock full o’ personality. And one can’t discount how strong Kent danced. Me likee.
Cat has eschewed her togas this week, coming out in rainbow-stripe sequins; I guess she must be celebrating the Federal court judge who declared Prop 8 in California unconstitutional. Woo-hoo! Then Adam Shankman referred to himself as Old Grey Mary, and we’re off on our adventure.
I really liked tonight’s opening number. When the music started getting manipulated, I had the feeling it was a Mia number, but the dance itself gave me more of a Wade vibe. But I really enjoyed it, and hats off to Mia. I haven’t always grooved on her work in the last while, but tonight I was a buy-in.
This redux show opens with six dancers doing their opening bits, and two of them were unusual: Billy, because he had this KNEE BRACE on to let us know that he had KNEE problems last week (maybe I’m being too cynical), and Jose, because I’m getting kinda embarrassed for him at this point, cuz he really can’t hold his own with the others up on that stage. Cat came out, clearly having slaughtered the biggest snake in the universe and skinned it to wear as tonight’s toga. And tonight’s guest judge is Toni Redpath…whom I think is the one that was really mean to the dancers during Vegas week. I don’t need judge histrionics…keep a lid on it, Redpath.
That was really a cop-out, Toothy.
I don’t usually post after the Results show, but this couldn’t go without saying.
First of all, Robert is NOT not growing…that was patent bullshit, and one of the many ways the judges were just covering their asses tonight for their cowardice.
Second of all, you can’t tell Billy that he has had a week off and can come back to compete again more rested than everybody else — and then let him come back and compete against everybody else. If there was some sort of logic Nigel was trying to convey with that crap, it was utterly lost.
I love how they do the taped intro of the Top Six, and then only five people come out with opening dancelets. This week’s gimp is Bbbbb-billy Bell! And he looked so oddly happy in the audience, one has to suspect that he’s ready to make like a banana and split from this competish…especially when Toothy announced that the doctors said he could dance, but then they asked him, “So you think you can dance?” and he said, “Nuh-uh, I no think so.” This season has gotten weird. Cat has apparently dyed a Hefty bag red in honor of fallen dancers, and slapped it on her body tonight.
Well, Ashley is the new Alex, injured too much to dance tonight. These crazy kids. Sorry, toots.
The first number tonight is Tahitian, with Lauren and All-Star Mark. It’s choreographed by some chick named Tahini, or Titania, or something, and she proceeds to explain to us that Tahitian dance is dance that comes from Tahiti. I’m serious. Then we see the dance. C’mon…really?! Who costumed this thing, Liza Minnelli? Those feathers were so huge I had not a clue what kind of dancing was going on — except that it didn’t do very much except shake Tahitian moneymakers. That was about as content-free as dancing gets on this show. Mark did look cute in his Tahitian mudflap loincloth, but all in all…what a hunk o’ Tahitian bunk. Next.
My love-hate relationship with Mia Michaels continues. Her opening “angel” number was great and crap simultaneously. But more great, especially that pas de deux that Robert did with Lauren toward the beginning. But, honey, who designed them fruity-tooty costumes? And is Billy now officially the cross-dresser of the show?
I was about to give Nikki Whatever the director a compliment and say that she got through the opening solos without cutting away at the wrong time, and then she screwed up Adechike’s solo and the last tableau. So glad you can use this program to learn how to televise dance…slowwwwly learn.
