NBC Goes Homo

NBC’s Today Show announced that they are opening their “Modern Wedding Contest” up to same-sex couples getting married. Needless to say, the Comments section of an online site announcing this news has received a lot of feedback from the Intolerant Backwash of America.

But there was one comment that held my attention — from someone named “Hannah,” whose fundamental opinion I obviously don’t agree with. However, even though her underlying belief is not one I can support, there is a clear-headedness to her conclusion that is rather astonishing:

Whether you agree with gay marriage or not, the constitution calls for a separation of church and state. Most people’s problems with homosexuality are religious, which I understand because I’m religious myself, and I personally find homosexuality wrong in the eyes of God. I also believe, though, that God loves everyone, regardless of who they are or what they have done, and it is not my or anyone else’s place to judge what other people do in their own lives, and I think that people who claim to follow God should back up their claim with love for everyone. However, are there any arguments that are not remotely religious that give a valid reason to oppose gay marriage? Our country is supposed to offer freedom to everyone, so imo, NBC is doing the right thing by opening this to all citizens of our country. :)

Thanks, “Hannah.” Until the day comes when your religion is determined not to be “the eyes of God,” you give me hope that there’s a way to coexist.
