NBC Goes Homo

July 9th, 2010

NBC’s Today Show announced that they are opening their “Modern Wedding Contest” up to same-sex couples getting married. Needless to say, the Comments section of an online site announcing this news has received a lot of feedback from the Intolerant Backwash of America.

But there was one comment that held my attention — from someone named “Hannah,” whose fundamental opinion I obviously don’t agree with. However, even though her underlying belief is not one I can support, there is a clear-headedness to her conclusion that is rather astonishing:

Auto-Tune Finally Used for Good Instead of Evil

July 8th, 2010

I don’t make it a big secret that I’m not a fan of Auto-tune…if you  can’t sing well enough without it, you don’t deserve to cut a record. Dude.

But here is a “remix” of that viral video of HungryBear9562 (or whatever his numbers are) going so emotional over a double rainbow. Read the rest of this entry »

SYTYCD Season 7 — Top 8 Results

July 8th, 2010

My love-hate relationship with Mia Michaels continues. Her opening “angel” number was great and crap simultaneously. But more great, especially that pas de deux that Robert did with Lauren toward the beginning. But, honey, who designed them fruity-tooty costumes? And is Billy now officially the cross-dresser of the show?

So You Think You Can Dance 7 — Top 8

July 7th, 2010

I was about to give Nikki Whatever the director a compliment and say that she got through the opening solos without cutting away at the wrong time, and then she screwed up Adechike’s solo and the last tableau. So glad you can use this program to learn how to televise dance…slowwwwly learn.

Broadway Madlibs

July 2nd, 2010

I didn’t even know this existed until I started surfing a certain wave on the YouTube. Here is Sutton Foster demolishing her showstopper from “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” followed by Sara Ramirez just being freakin’ brilliant as she attacks Gershwin. Read the rest of this entry »

Best. Nothing. Ever.

July 2nd, 2010

I’m on a “Chorus Line” bender right now.

This is Natalie Cortez from the revival cast of 2008, at her final performance. I never saw this production…it’s so engrained in my system from the old days that I didn’t want to have some kind of acid flashback (or have to restrain my legs from dancing along, which has happened during tribute events). The Gala — Chorus Line

July 2nd, 2010

I started doing the show just after Michael Bennett put up this special performance to celebrate “Chorus Line” being the longest-running musical in Broadway history. They had to add extra support to the stage to accommodate this amazing thing. Read the rest of this entry »

Opening of “A Chorus Line”

July 2nd, 2010

I don’t know where this bootleg came from. It’s apparently from the original national tour…and I’m suspecting that was circa 1977.

I still get choked up when Zack counts out Jazz for the third group of boys…even when I’m not in the group dancing it. Read the rest of this entry »

So You Think You Can Dance 7 — Top 9

July 1st, 2010

I’m starting off a little grumpy tonight…how many weeks into this are we, and the new director still can’t get the camera timing right on the opening dance bits? Jeez, Nikki…Cat mentioned how great they had all been, and I have little idea, since I was too busy being taken from long shot to close-up with the rhythmic grace of a drunken epileptic. Cat, however, is dressed like Toga Party at Tiffany’s, which is making me happy.

Tonight’s theme seems promising:  Who was your dance inspiration? Adechike started off by naming Desmond Richardson (whom I will always give high props for that amazing dance he gave to Jakob and Kathryn last year [don't tell everyone that this year's Alex-dance was the best thing ever, Mia, without thinking about that Jakob-dance, dear]). Unfortunately, Adechike still isn’t dancing with the connectedness of Mr. Richardson. He and the adorable Lauren did a content-free Dave Scott Hip Hop number. Adechike is trying to be all animated, but it isn’t coming from any kind of authentic place; just contrast what he was doing with what Lauren was doing…she was wiping the floor with the poor fellow. Sorry, but my patience with the chap is waning — he’s just not in the same league with Robert and Kent and most of the other boys. (Sorry…I don’t agree with the judges.)
